Staff from the Hackney Diabetes Centre led a 30 minute 'walk-a-thon' on World Diabetes Day, 14th November 2006. As part of the walk we visited the recently reopened London Fields Lido. For more information about World Diabetes Day visit the International Diabetes Federation website.

Structured Education

As recommended by the Diabetes National Service Framework we are now running three structured education programmes:

DESMOND - 6 hours of structured education for patients newly diagnosed (less than 12 months) with type 2 diabetes
X-pert - six 2½ hour sessions of structured education suitable for patients with type 2 diabetes. The registration form is available to download in pdf and Word form
"BICEP" - structured education for people with type 1 diabetes, incorporating carbohydrate counting

Diabetes Lay Educators

The "Coping with Diabetes" Project is funded by the NRF until March 2007. Pergul and Charlene are our trained Diabetes Lay Educator who are running educational groups at GP surgeries, Community Centres, Schools and at the Homerton Hospital for people with Diabetes and people at high risk of diabetes.

Please contact Pergul or Charlene on 020 8510 7182 if you would like a group in your surgery or Community Centre.

GPs and Practice Nurses are encouraged to refer patients with Diabetes, whose first language is not English, for groups currently being arranged.

"Sweet Talk" DVD

This educational DVD, in Turkish, is designed for people with diabetes, their family and freinds. It contains 52 minutes of footage in 6 chapters.

Copies are available free of charge from the Hackney Diabetes Centre.

AUDIO CD: An introduction to Type 2 Diabetes in Turkish and Sylhetti

These audio CDs available free of charge to all GP practices in Hackney. They give 30 - 40 minutes of basic information about type 2 diabetes, in Turkish or Sylhetti. Please contact the Diabetes Centre for copies. The script for the CDs are available in English, Turkish and Bengali.

My Diabetes

This is a pack containing written information about diabetes, contact details for local services and a patient held record book. The pack was originally developed by Newham PCT and has been adapted for the people of Hackney. These are available free of charge to all GP surgeries in Hackney in English and Turkish. Please contact Anna-Marie at the Diabetes Centre for copies.
